About Our Infectious Disease Program
Through the program, the resident will gain advanced training and expertise in the areas of infectious diseases and antimicrobial pharmacotherapy. The resident will develop skills in decision making regarding antimicrobial therapy, pharmacokinetic monitoring, antibiotic utilization, knowledge of antimicrobial resistance, formulary management, and infection control practices. The resident will be an active member of the pharmacy team and provide interventions that optimize antimicrobial therapy throughout the hospitals. The resident will also have the opportunity to assist in precepting rotation students and PGY1 residents.
Upon completion of the program the resident will have the skills to implement and direct a successful stewardship program that focuses on improving patient outcomes and promoting appropriate antimicrobial use; effectively participate as an ID pharmacy specialist on consult service; and have the necessary teaching and research experience desired for an infectious disease clinical pharmacy specialist.

Work as a clinical staff pharmacist every third weekend to gain additional experience in pharmacy practice (required).
Design and complete a research project in the area of infectious diseases pharmacotherapy, produce a manuscript suitable for peer-reviewed publication, and present results will at the regional Great Lakes Resident Conference in the spring (required).
Antimicrobial Stewardship will be a considerable focus of the residency. The resident will be actively involved in designing and implementing antimicrobial stewardship initiatives for Franciscan Health Indianapolis as well as the ministry antimicrobial stewardship program, which consists of 12 hospitals in Franciscan Alliance.
The resident will serve an integral role on the Microbiology Rapid Diagnostic Testing clinical response team for blood culture monitoring.
The resident will participate in a variety of committees including Infection Prevention, Quality, Pharmacy & Therapeutics, Local Antimicrobial Stewardship and Ministry Antimicrobial Stewardship.
The resident will have the opportunity to participate in the Indiana Pharmacy Teaching Certificate Program (IPTeC) offered through Purdue and Butler Universities, if not already done so in their PGY1. em description
